A disqualified driver who seriously injured two women in a crash on the A1 in Northumberland has been jailed for more than two years.

Bryan Storey, from North Shields, was driving a Vauxhall Corsa northbound, near South Charlton, around 4pm on September 14th, when it crossed lanes and collided with two cars travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Jeep suffered serious injuries to her knee while her passenger, also aged in her 20s, was left with broken bones which required surgery.

The driver of the Audi, who esaped unhurt, managed to swerve out of the way but was still struck by the vehicle.

At Newcastle Crown Court on Tuesday, Storey pled guilty to two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to provide a specimen and having no insurance, and was sentenced to 27 months in prison.

The 39-year-old, who has previous convictions for offences including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and robbery, is also banned from driving for two years after his release.

Following the sentencing, Sergeant Ben Rutherford, of Northumbria’s Road Policing Unit, said: “Bryan Storey’s actions on September 14th were reckless in the extreme and it is fortunate that the victims did not lose their lives in the collision.

“I hope the sentence handed down to Storey by the courts is a reminder to others about the serious consequences that can come from driving dangerously.

“Even a momentary loss of awareness can have a devastating impact on other road users.

“Our hope is that now the person who caused the victims’ injuries has been brought to justice, they will be able to take a degree of comfort and move on with their lives.”
