A 68-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman have died after two cars collided on the A1 south of Berwick.

It's understood a Citroen C3 Picasso had been travelling north when it collided with a VW Transporter travelling in the opposite direction.

The incident unfolded north of Haggerston shortly after 3pm on Friday (May 31st).

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised.

But both the man driving the Citreon and the woman, who was a passenger in the VW, died from their injuries.

Their next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

Another two people - male and female occupants of the VW - were taken to hospital with injuries which police say are not believed to be life-threatening.

The road remained closed for several hours but has since been re-opened.

Police are today issuing an appeal for information.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "An investigation has been launched into the full circumstances surrounding the collision.

"Officers are asking any witnesses, or anybody who was travelling in that area of the A1 and has dashcam footage that may assist their enquiries, to get in touch.

"Anyone with information can contact officers via the ‘Report’ page of Northumbria Police’s website or by calling 101 quoting reference NP-20240531-0645."
