Motorists using the A1 in Berwickshire are being warned of major disruption ahead, as 20 nights of resurfacing works get underway.

A one-and-a-half kilometre section of the cross-border route north of Reston will be closed between the hours of 7.30pm and 6am each night from Tuesday (October 22nd) - except for Fridays, when it will shut at 8pm.

Diversions will be in place between Berwick and Grantshouse, with southbound traffic being asked to follow an alternative route via Duns and Chirnside - adding around nine miles and 21 minutes to some journeys; while northbound traffic is being diverted through Eyemouth and Coldingham.

Work will continue on the nights of Saturday and Sunday, November 2nd and 3rd, however no works are planned on the nights of Saturday and Sunday, October 26th and 27th, and November 9th and 10th, or Sunday, November 27th; with the project due to be completed on Wednesday, November 20th.

Local councillor James Anderson said: "The two-way diversion is to avoid congestion and preserve the Coldingham moor road which struggles to take two-way HGV traffic."

BEAR Scotland is carrying out the work on behalf of Transport Scotland and says access for emergency vehicles, as well as residents within the closure zone, will be maintained at all times.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “We’re grateful to road users and local residents for their patience whilst these essential works are undertaken.

“Unfortunately, due to the high volume of traffic using this section of the A1 we have no option but to close the road to ensure the safety of the workforce and road users while resurfacing take place.

“We understand that a road closure of this nature is disruptive and have planned the works to take place overnight when traffic flows are lower to reduce the impact.

“We have taken on feedback from local communities following previous works using the same closure. Advance consultations with local community councils and residents have guided the selection of alternative diversion routes for these works, as well as the timing of the programme.”
