A1 closed following 'serious collision' near Berwick

The A1 has been closed following reports of a "serious" collision near the Scotland-England border.

Emergency services raced to the scene, near Lamberton, after the alarm was raised around 8pm on Wednesday, with reports of as many as nine police cars and an ambulance among those to respond.

The road is closed northbound from the Morrisons roundabout at Berwick to Ayton.

Northumbria Police say the cross-border route is likely to remain closed for some time.

A spokesperson for National Highways added: "The road is likely to be closed into the night for investigation work to take place."
