A1 closed both ways following 'serious accident'

A section of the A1 has been closed after a car was involved in a collision with a pedestrian.

It happened between the Ellingham and Newham turn-offs - south of Belford - around 11.15am today (Tuesday).

Emergency services are currently at the scene and police say diversions are in place.

The cross border route has been popular with visitors flocking to the Northumberland coast in recent days to enjoy the warm weather - with Bamburgh, Beadnell and Seahouses all seeing a boost.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 11.15am today, we received a report of a road traffic collision on the A1 southbound at Belford in Northumberland.

“It was reported that a vehicle had collided with a male pedestrian.

“Emergency services are in attendance at the scene and the male is receiving treatment for his injuries.

“A section of the road is currently closed and a diversion is in place.”

Meanwhile, police say the A7 is currently closed south of Hawick following a two-vehicle crash near Mosspaul.

Emergency services raced to the scene after the alarm was raised around 12.30pm this afternoon.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 12.30pm on Tuesday, 13 June, to a report of a two vehicle crash on the A7 near Mosspaul, near Hawick.

“Officers are in attendance and the road is currently closed.”
