A1 closed following collision involving a car and lorry
Last updated 16th Dec 2023
The A1 was closed in both directions close to the Scotland-England border following a "serious crash" involving a car and a lorry.
Police shut the route southbound at Burnmouth and northbound at Lamberton, in Berwickshire, with locals reporting diversions had led to "gridlock" on some side roads.
Emergency services raced to the scene after the alarm was raised around 9.15am today (Saturday).
Fire crews from Berwick, Duns and Dunbar were joined by an air ambulance from Glasgow shortly after 10am. It left just after midday and the road fully reopened just before 3pm.
The extent of any injuries is unknown.
It's the latest in a series of smashes on the busy cross-border route.
Earlier this month, three people were injured - two of them critically - following a two-car crash on the English side of the border, north of Berwick.
A man and a woman both aged in their 70s were taken to hospital, while a man in his 80s, was treated at the scene for injuries which have been described as "serious but non life-threatening".
It comes as frustrations mount over delays in dualling the A1 its entire length.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9.15am on Saturday, December 16th, police were called to a report of a serious road crash involving a car and a lorry on the A1.
“Emergency services including air ambulance are in attendance.
“The road is closed in both directions, southbound at Burnmouth and northbound at Berwick, with local diversions in place.”
A spokesperson for Berwick Community Fire Station added: "Since the winter weather’s set in, we’ve seen a sharp increase in the number of of RTC’s that we’ve attended, so we’d like to encourage drivers to take extra care on the roads.
"Be aware of road conditions, weather conditions and ensure your vehicle is ready for the winter months."
