Two people have been left with life-threatening injuries following a crash on the A1 near Berwick.

Police are appealing for information following the collision, which happened less than a mile from the Scotland-England border around 6.10pm yesterday (Thursday).

A brown Ford Mondeo is understood to have been travelling south when, for reasons yet to be established, it collided with a black Vauxhall Astra which was emerging from a junction near Folly House Farm.

Emergency services raced to the scene after the alarm was raised and the occupants of the Astra - a man and a woman both aged in their 70s - were taken to hospital, where they remain in a critical condition.

The driver of the Mondeo, a man in his 80s, was treated at the scene for injuries which have been described as "serious but non life-threatening".

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have evidence such as dash-cam footage.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police using the report tool on the Northumbria Police website, or call 101, quoting log number NP-20231207-0814.
