Police have confirmed a pedestrian has died following a collision with a car on the A1 at Alnwick.

Emergency services raced to the scene, near to the road's junction with the A1068, after the alarm was raised, around 11.45pm last night (Tuesday).

But the person, who has not officially been named, could not be saved.

The cross-border route was closed overnight while police examined the scene, but reopened this morning. And the A1068 road reopened earlier this afternoon.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 11.45pm yesterday (Tuesday), police received a report that a car had collided with a pedestrian on the A1 northbound at Alnwick, near to the A1068.

“Emergency services attended however, sadly the person was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
