Motorists are being warned of disruption ahead as work gets underway on improvements to two main routes through the Borders this week.

A 10mph convoy system will be in operation on the A1 overnight for the next week - between 7.30pm tonight (Monday) and 6am - as resurfacing work begins on the southbound approach to Cockburnspath roundabout, although the road will remain open in both directions.

No works are planned to take place on Saturday and Sunday nights. But motorists are being advised to leave extra time for journeys.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s south-east network manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will help to address the defects on this section of the A1 and will greatly improve the experience for motorists.

“A convoy system of traffic management will be in place during these works to safety of the workforce and motorist.  We’ve arranged for the project to take place overnight to minimise the impact.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding. We’ll do all we can to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.”

Meanwhile, BEAR Scotland also plans three nights of resurfacing works on the A7.

The road will be closed Kingsknowe Roundabout to Selkirk overnight on Friday, June 2nd, to allow Russell Place in Selkirk to be resurfaced; and then shut again from Selkirk to Hawick on the nights of Monday and Tuesday, June 5th and 6th, to allow works at the Galalaw Roundabout - between 7.30pm and 6am each night.

A nine-mile diversion will be in place on Friday, via the A6091, A68 and A699; while a 13-mile diversion will be in place the following week, via the A698, A68 and A699.

Further works will be undertaken at the A7 Russell Place site on Monday, June 5th, but the road will remain open with temporary traffic lights in place.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: "We’re pleased to be able to carry out these surfacing improvements on the A7 in Selkirk and Hawick.

“It is essential for safety that we close the road while work is taking place, however we’ve scheduled the works overnight to minimise disruption.

“If you do need to use the A7 on these nights, our advice is to plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey.”

Scottish Borders Council is also planning patching works on the A7 between Galashiels and Buckholm on Monday, June the 5th, for five days - between the hours of 8.30am and 4.30pm. Diversions will be in place.
