A man has pleaded guilty to the murder of his partner.

Mathew Hyde, 41, was arrested on 31 March this year after strangling his partner Sara Bateman, 50, at an address in Willenhall Road, Wolverhampton.

Hyde had been involved in an argument with Sara, which culminated in him assaulting and fatally strangling her. The body of the 50-year-old was discovered by her son on 30 March and her death was immediately declared suspicious due to the nature of her injuries.

Hyde had fled the scene, but we quickly tracked him down to a nearby address and arrested him in the early hours of 31 March.

Following Hyde’s arrest Sara’s family said they were heartbroken at the loss of their loving and caring mum, sister and nan. "There are no words to describe the pain we are feeling at this moment in time," they said. "She will be forever in our hearts and dearly missed by us all."

Detective Inspector Nick Barnes, from our force CID, said: “This was a callous and vicious act against Sara in what should have been the safety of her own home, by a person she should have felt safe to be with. Her family have been left devastated and remain in our thoughts at this difficult time."

The 41-year-old appeared before Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday (4 September), where he pleaded guilty to murder.

He will be sentenced on 13 October 2023.
