The first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham has been won by Team England athlete, Alex Yee, in the triathlon.

Sutton Park, home to the event, roared as Alex Yee crossed the line with an England flag in one hand and the finish line tape in the other.

Thousands lined the streets in Sutton Coldfield and in the park itself, as athletes swam, cycled and ran.

Alex Yee completed the race with a time of 50 minutes and 34 seconds.

New Zealand's Hayden Wilde came second after a 10 second penalty, and Australian athlete Matthew Hauser in third.

On finishing his race Alex said: "It's ridiculous. I'm just really proud to have done that in front of friends and family and the fans.

"It was just really special. I feel a bit lost for words.

"So, yeah, it's just incredible to be part of this and see so many different nations participating."

Team England's Georgia Taylor-Brown is the next medal hopeful for Team England in the women's triathlon.
