Six arrested after fighting breaks out at Black Country derby

Five people have been arrested after a disorder broke out during the FA Cup match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion.

Play was paused for 38 minutes yesterday after fans stormed the pitch.

The players were taken off the pitch in the 83rd minute, soon after Wolves scored their second goal to lead 2-0 in the Black Country derby.

Four people were treated for injuries. West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "Of those, only one was as a result of an injury sustained in the incident. The man was treated at the scene and discharged.

"A further three patients were suffering from existing medical complaints. Of those, one was taken to Sandwell Hospital for further assessment; two others were assessed at the ground and discharged."

West Bromwich Albion said in a statement on their website: "The club condemns in the strongest terms the unsavoury scenes which disrupted Sunday's Black Country derby.

"The club will work with West Midlands Police and the Football Association to fully investigate the incidents which resulted in a suspension to the game."

West Brom continued: "Any individual involved in the disorder will be subject to a club ban, in addition to potential criminal investigation."

The Football Association said: “The disorder that occurred at the Black Country derby between West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers is completely unacceptable.

"Safety and security are of the utmost importance, and the behaviour of those involved is dangerous and inexcusable. We will be investigating these serious incidents alongside the clubs and the relevant authorities, and the appropriate action will be taken.”

The Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, said: "A real shame to see a minority try and ruin the Black Country derby.

"A huge thank you to police and stewards in the stadium who dealt with the problems, transport staff who ensured match-goers got home safely, and of course, the majority of fans for behaving impeccably."
