A man has been jailed after a woman was left with life-changing injuries following an attack in Telford.

Lee Sargent, of Culmington in Stirchley, was sentenced to 18 years at Stafford Crown Court today (Wednesday 10 April) for attempted murder.

On August 1, 2023, police responded to a dropped 999 call at an address in Culmington.

Officers found a woman slumped on a bed upstairs with serious life-threatening injuries caused by a meat cleaver.

The victim had received 32 injuries to her face and hands during the attack. First aid carried out the officers saved the woman’s life.

47-year-old Sargent was arrested for attempted murder and charged the following day.

He pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing in December 2023.

The victim spent 11 days in hospital following the attack and suffered life changing injuries.

Detective Constable Becky Jasper, the officer in charge of the investigation, said: “We welcome today’s sentence of Lee Sargent, as this is one of the worst cases of domestic violence that I have ever dealt with.

“It was a sustained attack, which resulted in life changing injuries for the victim. I’d like to thank her for her cooperation and bravery throughout this investigation.

“I would urge anyone who believes they are a victim of domestic abuse to speak to police.”

In addition to 18 years and 10 months for attempted murder, he was given two months for assaulting an emergency service worker and two months in an unconnected child neglect case.
