West Midlands Police have charged a man with animal cruelty after one of their police dogs was attacked while helping to detain a suspect in Wolverhampton.

Lee Potts, aged 39, has appeared before city magistrates and is also accused of public order offences and having a dog dangerously out of control.

The charges come after a series of arson attacks in Wolverhampton on Friday.

Officers were alerted at around 3.30am after a small fire was started at the Horse and Jockey pub on Church Street, Bilston.

A short time later several vehicles were either set alight or damaged by fire along Union Street, Bell Street and Greencroft.

A suspect, who had a dog with him, was located in a park off Millfield Road by officers.

One of the police dogs, PD Snow, was attacked but not injured during the incident.
