Midlands Air Ambulance is calling for support from the public so that they can keep saving people 'on the hardest day of their lives'.

The Cosford site is holding an open-day today (18th May) for members of the public to see their life-saving work.

Who are Midlands Air Ambulance?

Midlands Air Ambulance are a charity funded entirely by donations from the public.

Open days are held at each of the charity's bases each year so that the public can meet critical care clinicians to find out more about the work the Midlands Air Ambulance does.

The open day is running from 10am until 4pm and gives people in Shropshire the chance to see how aircrew respond to real life events with a demonstration helicopter pod.

"A 15 minute flight will make a huge difference"

David is a doctor onboard one of the Midland's Air Ambulance helicopters. He told us why their work is so vital:

"In rural areas like Shropshire, you are a long way away from the bigger hospitals. If you need urgent treatment, you may need to go to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

"To go there by land can take over an hour. Being able to load a patient on an air ambulance and get there on a 15 minute flight will make a huge difference," he said.

"It is something I am very proud to do"

David told us what he finds rewarding about the job: "It is a real privilege to be able to help people on what is without doubt the hardest day of their lives.

"It is something I am very proud to do each day.

"Coming along to one of our open days teaches you lifesaving skills like CPR. It is a skill that could save a life some day," he said.
