Gareth Ainsworth leaves Shrewsbury to join Gillingham

Shrewsbury Town have confirmed head coach Gareth Ainsworth has left the club to join Gillingham.

Assistant head coach Richard Dobson has also departed Shropshire to take up a role at the League Two side.

In a statement online, Shrewsbury Town said: "Both Gareth and Richard expressed their desire to leave Shrewsbury after being approached by Gillingham."

"As a club, we made every effort to persuade them to stay – either for the duration of their contracts or until the end of the season.

"However, they chose to move on after Gillingham triggered a termination clause in their contracts.

"Earlier today, our Chairman, Roland Wycherley MBE, published an open letter addressing their departures."
