It's after the cyanide was spilt into the water.

A crowd funder has been launched by the Canal and River Trust to help clean up Walsall Canal after the toxic spill.

The Environment Agency confirmed that around 4,000 litres of sodium cyanide were released last Monday.

Around 12 miles of the canal network had to be closed off.

The majority has now been reopened, after testing showed water quality is within safety guidelines.

The Environment Agency (EA) is investigating a company following what it termed an "unacceptable" incident and warned it would take "robust enforcement action" if any wrongdoing had occurred.

Anochrome Ltd said it had immediately notified the EA and Severn Trent Water following the incident and its senior management team remained on-site working to minimise and contain the spill.

Now, the Canal and River Trust is asking for donations to help recover wildlife, as it's expected it could take years for the canal to recover.

The state of wildlife is still yet unknown.
