People in Basingstoke are again being encouraged to help water young trees across the area.

Water Me’ was first rolled out across the borough last summer and gave residents the opportunity to help support Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s watering programme by providing the trees with additional water when the weather is dry.

Each tree will have a label attached to it and residents are encouraged to find their nearest one and to help to water it – preferably using recycled water like washing up or rain water.

This year 214 new trees were planted.

Cllr Mark Ruffell Cabinet Member for the Natural Environment and Climate Improvement said:

“Last year we were really pleased that so many residents helped us to give our young trees the best possible chance by watering them with recycled water.

“Every year we plant additional trees providing a positive contribution to the borough’s natural environment, a habitat for wildlife and to help shape our landscape.

“While the council carries out a rigorous programme of watering during the summer months, when it is particularly dry, our residents can help by providing extra water.”

Residents can find their nearest tree by visiting the council's website.
