Maidenhead MP Theresa May has weighed in to the row over plans to build more than 2,000 homes on Maidenhead golf course.

Campaign group Maidenhead Great Park has said the 132-acre green space should be preserved as a great park for residents to enjoy and the wildlife and biodiversity should be protected given the climate emergency.

But the Conservative-run council has said this is “the most sustainable site” within the borough and it would have to release other green belt areas if it was to scrap the golf course, which the local authority paid nearly £16m for.

The former PM says she has “received reassurance” from the council part of the development will be set aside as green space.

A spokesperson for the MP said: “Mrs May has been in contact with the council on numerous occasions to relay constituent fears about the potential impacts of the development.

“However, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead have an essential duty to build new homes and due to a decision made some years ago by the planning inspectorate the majority have to be built in Maidenhead.

“Hence the council’s decision that part of the golf course site should be set aside for homes. Mrs May has received reassurances that the council will continue to support biodiversity throughout the borough and part of the development will be set aside as green space.

“Mrs May has also written to the council to enquire about the presence of TPO tree protection order – a mechanism of protecting the trees on the golf course.”
