Police investigate serious sexual assault in Thatcham

Incident happened late on Sunday night

Police are investigating a serious sexual assault in Thatcham on Sunday evening.

At around 11.30pm on Sunday (15/8) officers were called after it was reported that a woman was subjected to a serious sexual assault in a layby on the A4 in Thatcham, opposite the Mecure Hotel.

The victim is currently being supported by specially trained officers.

Investigating officer Detective Inspector Alice Broad, said:

“We are in the early stages of investigating this serious incident in which a woman has been raped and we are following multiple lines of enquiry.

“We are asking anyone who was travelling on the A4 last night at around the time of the incident to please call if they believe they could help our investigation.

“Additionally if they were travelling on the road and have a dash-cam we would ask them to check the footage and please contact us if it shows anything.

“Anyone with information should call 101 or they can report online quoting reference 43210366130.

“Or if they wish to report anonymously they can do so by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“This is a concerning incident and I would like to reassure the public that we are thoroughly investigating and as a result of the incident members of the public are likely to see an increase in police presence in the local area.”

Police closed a section of the A4 Bath Road to carry out forensic work.
