Consultation over busy Berkshire road junction

The Royal borough wants to remove a mini-roundabout near Bray

A MINI roundabout on the A308 near Bray could be upgraded into a signal-controlled junction to improve road safety.

Royal Borough residents will be given a chance to have a say on the council’s plans to improve safety for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists, at the junction with Holyport Road.

The bid includes installing traffic lights on the three arms of the current roundabout, helping to better control traffic flows and reducing the possibility of collisions, where there have been several near misses over the years at the junction, according to the council.

The pedestrian crossing could be a toucan on the A308, near the eastern arm of the junction, as well as another pedestrian crossing on the western side of the main road, and to the south on Holyport Road.

Other proposals include new features include a waiting box for cyclists at the junction on Holyport Road, and the shared pathway on the north side of the A308 will be upgraded to feature separate spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. Cyclists will have access to join and leave this cycle path to/from Holyport Road.

Traffic from Maidenhead on the A308 will continue to have a second approach lane for turning right into Holyport Road, with dedicated time within the light sequence to make the turn.

Cllr Phil Haseler, lead member for highways and transport, said:

“This site was identified for improvement in the A308 Corridor Study and this proposed scheme supports our desire for walking and cycling in our borough to be more convenient, safe and enjoyable travel options for everyone as set out in our adopted Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan.

“We want to ensure the borough’s infrastructure supports the current and future needs of residents, businesses and visitors and helps connect neighbourhoods with improvements such as the upgrade to this junction. With the right infrastructure we can also support an increase in walking and cycling rates in the borough and improve the safety of our streets.

“This scheme will bring real benefits to road users with better management of traffic movements at this junction helping to minimise the risk of conflicts, as well as creating safer pedestrian and cycle crossings – something the current roundabout does not have. I’d encourage as many residents as possible to tell us what they think of the plans.”

Residents have until Wednesday, March 22, to give their views. All feedback will be considered as part of finalising the design, and before any decisions are made. If the development is supported, work is anticipated to start this summer.
