Council pays out £70k over parking fine error in Reading
Reading borough council has updated councillors a year on from admitting the mistake
Nearly seventy thousand pounds has been refunded to motorists in Reading after parking fines were wrongly issued.
In October last year the council said it had mistakenly issued more than six thousand penalty charge notices.
The errors occurred over an 11 year period between 2013 and 2024.
The council say so far more than 700 refunds have been issued following a proactive effort to contact the motorists involved.
A report to the council's audit and governance committee said they were now closing the restitution scheme they set up but added they would still deal with any claims that came through.
