Labour has maintained its control of Reading Council retaining its 32 council seats.

Although they lost a seat to the Green Party they defeated the conservatives in Emmer Green - the first time the seat hasn't been held by the tories.

The Green Party strengthened its grip as the official opposition by gaining a seat.

Make up of the council after this year's local election:

Labour 32 (no change)

Green Party 8 (+1)

Conservative 4 (-1)

Liberal Democrat 3 (no change)

Independent 1 (no change)

Defeated conservative candidate Simon Robinson blamed the national party for ending his 10 years as a councillor (see video below)

First result of the night was declared around 3am and it was a victory for former conservative councillor David Stevens who won for labour in Abbey Ward, taking over the seat relinquished by veteran councillor Tony Page.
