Reading FC hit by Coronavirus outbreak
Pre-season friendly against Aberdeen called off
Reading football club say a player and two support staff have tested positive for covid while on a pre-season training camp in Scotland.
A friendly against Aberdeen due to be played on Friday afternoon has now been called off.
The club said:
"Unfortunately our pre-season friendly against Aberdeen, scheduled to be played at the Dons’ Cormack Park training ground tomorrow afternoon, has been cancelled.
"The decision was made this afternoon following three positive COVID-19 results recorded in the latest series of routine tests which have been regularly undertaken by every individual involved in our pre-season trip to Scotland.
"Having recorded only negative results in the rounds of testing to date, two members of football support staff and one player tested positive this morning.
"All three individuals have been isolating in their rooms and will continue to isolate in accordance with EFL and government guidance.
"Due to the COVID protocol measures in place at the club, the rest of the squad - having tested negative this morning – have been permitted to continue their final couple of days of pre-season preparation in Scotland as planned.
"However, with Aberdeen due to host us at their training ground in less than 24 hours’ time and with the Scottish top tier side readying themselves for UEFA Conference League qualifier against Swedish side BK Hacken next week, Friday’s friendly fixture will now not take place as a precaution.
"We would like to thank Aberdeen for their cooperation in these circumstances and wish Stephen Glass’ side the best of luck in their qualifier next week as well as in their forthcoming Scottish Premiership campaign."
