A former Berkshire police officer has been jailed for misconduct after entering inappropriate relationships with members of the public he met through his work.

Nicholas Fielding-Smith, aged 42, who served as a police constable in the county, was sentenced to one year and 10 months in prison at Reading Crown Court on 17th October.

Between 11th October 2011 and 31st May 2020, Fielding-Smith began relationships with two individuals he encountered while carrying out his duties as an officer.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of misconduct in a public office and one count of unauthorised access to data at the same court in September. The convictions also relate to an incident on 7th June 2019, where Fielding-Smith accessed police information without a genuine policing reason.

Fielding-Smith was formally charged on 29th May this year and resigned from Thames Valley Police in June. A third charge of misconduct was dismissed during the proceedings.

Deputy Chief Constable Ben Snuggs said: “Former PC Nicholas Fielding-Smith has been brought to justice for misconduct in a public office and computer misuse.

“I am very clear that Thames Valley Police will never tolerate behaviour like this, which plainly falls far below the high standards expected of them by the public.

“We will always thoroughly investigate allegations of criminality and misconduct, and will deal with people appropriately, whether serving and former, and put them before the courts where justified. This is a key part of us maintaining the trust of our communities and demonstrates our commitment to public focused excellence.”
