Newbury looks for new mace bearer

The job demands you must be confident and punctual

Newbury Town Council is on the lookout for a new mace bearer for civic duties in the town.

The job comes with a £100 a year salary, plus a £25 appearance fee – and one of the top requirements for the post is that candidates must be comfortable standing for long periods of time in all weather conditions.

Applicants must be willing to lead civic processions in a dignified manner, be confident in facing the public and punctual.

The role needs to dress in the required uniform and carry the mace leading civic processions at annual events including mayor making, Remembrance Sunday and special events such as town twinning.

The uniform includes a robe and tricorn hat, provided by the council.

The job description says the mace bearer must follow the instructions from town marshal and/or civic manager when in a civic procession and lay out the required civic regalia for full council meetings and to announce the arrival of the mayor.

When the mayor’s attendant is unavailable, to stand in and fulfil the duties of mayor’s attendant when requested and available ensuring the safekeeping of regalia.

The post holder must also be willing to learn about the history of Newbury – and be politically neutral.
