Details of a plan for a new market square in Reading town centre have been revealed.

A developer wants to create a courtyard for independent retailers, and an apart-hotel on the corner of Queen Victoria Street and Friar Street.

Thackery estates is expected to submit a planning application in early February to develop a courtyard for independent retailers with an apart-hotel surrounding it.

The developers say the courtyard could be used for events such as outdoor cinema screenings and farmers’ markets. It will open up space that previously had no public access.

The company say: “The vision is to create a destination development befitting Reading’s emerging cultural and economic status.”
