A multimillion pound golf course in Ascot owned by the wife of a jailed banker has been sold.

Zamira Hajiyeva agreed that she would forfeit Mill Ride Golf Club, as well as her Knightsbridge townhouse following a six-year probe by the National Crime Agency.

Earlier this year, the townhouse in London was reduced in price in order to make it more feasible to be bought, with its original price tag being reduced by £1.25 million.

Now, it has been confirmed by estate agent Savills - in charge of selling the assets - that the golf course had been sold with a guide price of £4.25 million. The estate agent did not disclose who the golf course was sold to.

In total, Hajiyeva will earn 30% of the profits of the sale, while the UK government will recover the remaining 70%.

It comes after Hajiyeva and her husband Jahangir, were involved in an fraud scandal, amid claims that during his time as the chairman of the International Bank of Azerbaijan, he had embezzled millions.

An investigation by the NCA claimed that the golf club's purchase was "a direct result of large-scale fraud and embezzlement", as well as "false accounting and money laundering".

Lawyers hired by Mrs Hajiyeva last year said she and her family were "happy to now be able to move on with their lives" following the debacle.

The legal firm added that she had taken the decision "to settle the proceedings because it proved impossible to defend them".
