Man pleads not guilty to Berkshire landowner's murder

34 year old Thomas Schreiber appears in court accused of killing Sir Richard Sutton who owns the Benham estate in west Berkshire

A 34 year old man has pleaded not guilty to the murder of millionaire Sir Richard Sutton.

Thomas Schreiber from Gillingham appeared at a plea hearing at Winchester Crown Court on Monday July 26, 2021, to answer three charges.

In addition to the count of murder, the defendent is also accused of the attempted murder of Anne Schreiber, and of driving a Range Rover dangerously along the A303, A4, and M3.

Police were called to Sir Richard Sutton's home in Higher Langham, Gillingham on the evening of Wednesday April 7, 2021.

Officers found the 83 year old with stab wounds, and he was later pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortum examination confirmed he was stabbed in the chest.

A woman in her 60's, Anne Schreiber was also found at the property suffering knife wounds, and was airlifted to hospital.

Thomas Schreiber was arrested later that day, in the Hammersmith area of London on suspicion of murder. He will face trial on the November 29, 2021.

Sir Richard was listed at number 435 in the Sunday Times Rich List last year, with an estimated family fortune of £301 million – a rise of £83 million on the previous year. The guide said Sir Richard’s company owns London hotels the Sheraton Grand Park Lane and the Athenaeum, plus three smaller venues.

He had an extensive property and farming portfolio, including the 6,500-acre Benham Estate in west Berkshire and the Stainton Estate in Lincolnshire.
