A market in Reading has been closed down by Police after reports covid regulations weren't being followed.

Organisers of the Lower Earley Farmers Market agreed to close after Police said there were an "excessive amount of people" in attendance and no social distancing measures in place.

Thames Valley Police said:

"After reports regarding an excessive amount of people gathering at a market in Lower Earley with no social distancing measures in place, Thames Valley Police attended, closed the market and moved everyone on in order to ensure social distancing measures were met.

"No fines were issued, but the breach was reported to the local authority to consider if any further formal action should be taken.

"We are committed to engaging, explaining and encouraging the public, and will only move to enforcement as a last resort.

"We really do recognise that this is a tough time for people, but we must all continue to play our part, and we all have a responsibility to ensure that we maintain our commitment to the restrictions so that we can emerge from lockdown."
