A 40-year-old man has died following a police chase to the south-west of Andover.

A van ended up in a field off Red Rice Road near Stockbridge on Sunday night.

Police said they had been in the area responding to reports of a burglary in Monxton.

The force has referred itself to the police watchdog.

"At around 11.00pm on Sunday 30 January police were in pursuit of a silver Ford Transit Connect on the A343.

"After a short time, the vehicle left the carriageway and came to rest in a field on Red Rice Road.

"The van was not in collision with another vehicle.

"Colleagues from the ambulance service attended, however, the driver of the vehicle, a 40-year-old man from Hythe, was pronounced dead before he got to hospital.

"His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
