Man charged with murder over the death of a baby in Newbury

Police have made the charge after a year long investigation

Police investigating the death of a one-month-old baby in Newbury last year have charged a man with murder.

Officers were called to an address in Fountain Gardens, Ashridge Court by South Central Ambulance Service at about 1.50am on Saturday, 9 May 2020, following reports that a one-month-old baby boy was in cardiac arrest.

The baby was taken to hospital for treatment but later died.

On 14 May last year, a man and a woman, both from Newbury, were arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with this investigation. They were later released on bail.

Yesterday (25/5), they were rearrested. James Lawton, aged 27, of Boreham Field, Warminster, Wiltshire, has been charged with one count of murder and GBH with intent in relation to the incident.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at Reading Magistrates’ Court today (26/5).

A 25-year-old woman from Newbury has been released on bail.
