Motorists are being warned about closures on the M4 in Berkshire this weekend - with full closures will be in place at both ends of the county.

West Berkshire

The M4 between junctions 13 (Chieveley) and 14 (Hungerford) will be closed in both directions from 9pm on Friday 20 August to 6am on Sunday 22 August 2021.

It's to allow for new bridge beams to be installed using a large crane spanning across both carriageways.

A signed diversion will be in place via the A338, A4 and A34 with additional signage on the approaches to the closure on local routes.

East Berkshire

There will be another closure between junction 6 (Slough) and junction 8/9 (Maidenhead). This closure is due to take place after midnight (12:05am) Sunday 22 August when the lifting works are complete at junction 13 and 14 and will continue until 6am on Monday 23 August.

During the closure, signed diversions will be in place via the A308M, A308, A332 and A355.

Both closures will not run at the same time so the junction 6 to 8/9 carriageway closure will not begin until the junction 13 to 14 carriageway closure has been removed.

The work between junctions 6 and 8/9 is to switch traffic management associated with the M4 upgrade and to carry out 2,500 tons of resurfacing as well as continuing to install technology to improve journeys.

Highways England programme manager, Steve Foxley, said:

“We are aware that the roads will be a little busier this weekend with the school holidays and events at the Rewind South festival nearby. This essential work has been carefully planned and is being closely co-ordinated so that only one closure is in place at any time during the day. We will provide additional signage on diversion routes and advise people to plan their journeys in advance and use alternative routes if possible.”

Highways England say delays are expected, so all road users are advised to plan their journeys in advance or to seek alternative routes if possible.
