The widow of PC Andrew Harper has said senior government figures have shown support for her campaign to introduce tougher jail terms for those who kill members of the emergency services.

Lissie Harper attended a meeting with Home Secretary Priti Patel and Justice Secretary Robert Buckland at the Home Office on Wednesday morning.

The 29-year-old has been campaigning for "Harper's Law" to ensure those convicted of killing an emergency worker are handed a mandatory life sentence.

PC Harper died on 15 August 2019, after he responded to reports of a gang stealing a quad bike from outside a house in rural West Berkshire.

After his patrol car came face-to-face with the vehicle towing the quad bike, the young officer became caught in the tow rope and was dragged behind the vehicle for more than a mile, suffering fatal injuries.

A petition drawn up by Mrs Harper, calling for Harper's Law, has now received more than 650,000 signatures.
