A charity in Reading has celebrated the reopening of its main site in the town centre.

Launchpad is a charity that has worked for 46 years to prevent homelessness in Reading.

It has proudly celebrated the official reopening of its newly refurbished drop-in space at The Stables, 1a Merchant’s Place.

This revitalised space, made possible by our generous supporters and a large donation from the Earley Charity, marks a significant milestone in Launchpad’s mission to provide a safe, welcoming, and accessible environment for people at risk of homelessness or housing insecurity in Reading.

After six months of essential renovation work, the space has been transformed into an inclusive and supportive setting.

The updated facilities now include a welcoming reception area, a triage room for support, and improved accessibility throughout. These changes reflect Launchpad’s commitment to ensuring that every individual who walks through its doors feels seen, heard, and supported.

The grand reopening was attended by councillor Alice Mpofu-Coles (Labour, Whitley) the Mayor of Reading, supporters, charity partners, and community members.

Attendees enjoyed light refreshments and heard from Launchpad CEO Su Hamblyn, who spoke about the impact of the new space on both staff and clients.

She said: “This new space is more than just bricks and mortar— it’s a place where lives are changed, hope is restored, and everyone is treated with empathy and respect.

“Thanks to the generosity of the Earley Charity and our community, we now have a welcoming space where people are received without judgement, supported through crisis, and given the chance to rebuild their lives.”

The drop-in service, which operates every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10am to 2pm, provides free, confidential support to individuals facing housing challenges.

From benefit advice to landlord issues and compassionate guidance, Launchpad’s team is there to help prevent a crisis before it begins.

The Stables will now stand for another 40 years, serving the community, offering connection, support and a fresh start to those in need.

The building was reopened on Thursday, July 31.

You can find out more, support Launchpad’s work, or make a donation on its website.

The charity is one of the beneficiaries of Reading Borough Council’s Tap for Reading scheme, which was launched in January.

People can donate £2, £5, £10 or £20 at Tap for Reading locations in the town centre, including Broad Street Mall and The Oracle.

It provides a way for the public to support those in need without inadvertently contributing to harmful behaviours such as addiction.

Donations can also be made online on a dedicated web page.
