The MP for Henley and Thame Freddie van Mierlo has written to the chief executive of the Environment Agency asking for a progress report on repairs to a footbridge at Marsh lock near Henley.

The bridge is part of the national walking route along the Thames and links Henley with Shiplake but its been closed for more than two years awaiting repairs.

After a row over who was responsible for it the Environment Agency finally said it was up to them to repair it, but say they don't have any money available.

Mr van Mierlo, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in July, says residents currently face a long diversion:

"You have to cross a busy road twice and that is simply too dangerous and unsuitable for most people and its also not a particularly attractive walk anymore.

"What was previously a 20-30 minute walk which you could do quite easily is now much much and more unpleasant.

"The route forms part of the Thames path, which is a nationally recognised trail, so it's a fantastic walking route which ramblers and anglers enjoy using but also an important walking route which connects Henley and Shiplake and residents are really frustrated by the situation."

In his letter the MP says he wants to help the Environment Agency to secure the money they need to repair the bridge.
