Pop up store plans to hand out free winter clothing in Reading
Organisers are appealing for donations
A pop up store at Reading railway will hand out free winter clothing later this week.
Reading Basingstoke Community Rail Partnership is working with Reading Borough Council’s Safer Streets Council, Network Rail and Great Western Railway to encourage the people of Reading to donate surplus winter wear and offer it to anyone who can make use of it to avoid it going to landfill or just sitting unused in a wardrobe.
A spare retail unit in the Brunel Arcade at Reading Station will be converted into a pop up Shop, where the winter wear will be available to be taken away for free.
Everyone is welcome to donate their spare good quality winter coats, fleeces, hats, gloves and scarves so they can be reused effectively.
Advice will also be available on keeping warm.
How will it work?
On Wednesday and Thursday 8-9 February from 8 am until 2 pm
Donations of coats, fleeces, hats, gloves, and scarves – all ages/sizes will be gratefully received in the Free Shop next to Costa Coffee near the main ticket office
On Friday 10th & Saturday 11th February between 10am and 5pm
Just turn up and anyone can take free winter items from the Free Shop, ,
Rail Officer Lucy Lomax said:
“We know there is a demand for winter clothing from many people this year we want to recycle unused items to those who really need them or are finding it difficult to buy them with the current cost of living problems. We are looking forward to trying this innovative project at Reading and thank our partners who have helped make this possible."
A similar event recently took place at Petersfield.
The Reading Basingstoke Community Rail Partnership is a not for profit organisation which aims to promote the rail services and stations covering Reading, Reading West, Green Park, Mortimer, Bramley and Basingstoke and link communities with their local railway.
