Free festive bus travel returns to West Berkshire this December
Enjoy free bus rides on three Saturdays this holiday season.
Bus journeys on three Saturdays in December will be free for passengers travelling across West Berkshire, with the initiative aiming to make holiday travel more affordable and environmentally friendly.
On 6th, 13th, and 20th December, all bus journeys starting in West Berkshire will cost nothing – and return trips will also be free, provided passengers ask the driver for a return ticket when they board. Concessionary Bus Passes will remain valid as usual.
This scheme aims to help people take advantage of the festive lights, shop for gifts at local businesses or enjoy restaurants and fairs, making it easier to connect with loved ones during the season.
Participating bus companies supporting the initiative include Reading Buses, Newbury & District, Thames Travel, Stagecoach, and the council-operated Connect buses.
A dedicated West Berkshire Community Connect timetable will also be available in the Northwest Downlands and Thatcham Connect areas. Details can be found on West Berkshire Council’s website.
Cllr Stuart Gourley, Executive Member for Environment and Highways at West Berkshire Council, said the initiative is part of efforts to bring communities together while encouraging sustainable travel.
“We’re delighted to offer free festive bus travel again this year," he said.
"It’s a simple way to bring communities together during one of the busiest times of the year. Whether you’re visiting loved ones, enjoying the Christmas lights, or supporting local shops and events, we want to make it easier and more affordable for everyone to get around and make the most of this festive season.”
Funding from HM Government has made the scheme possible, as part of West Berkshire Council’s ongoing Enhanced Partnership with local bus operators aimed at improving bus services.
