Major fire breaks out in Reading town centre

Fire appliances from across Berkshire are in attendance

A major fire has broken out in Reading town centre.

Royal Berkshire and Rescue Service were called at 2.11pm this afternoon to Friar Street and a fire on a second floor of a building near to the Union Street alleyway that links to Broad Street.

RBFRS said:

"Fire crews from Caversham Road, Wokingham Road, Whitley Wood, Theale, Wokingham, Crowthorne and Bracknell, along with two Officers are on the scene.

"An Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP) from Whitley Wood Fire Station and an Incident Command Unit (ICU) from Maidenhead Fire Station are also in attendance.

"As a precaution, we are advising residents and businesses to keep windows and doors shut if you live/ work in the immediate area affected.

"Emergency services are likely to remain on the scene for some time."

Unconfirmed reports say no one has been injured.

Bus services are running around 30 minutes late and are being diverted away from Friar Street.
