A woman has been sentenced following a dog attack in Church Crookham.
It comes after Police received a report that a dog was attacked by another dog – a Rhodesian Ridgeback Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross – in an alleyway near Sandy Lane/Jubilee Drive on Friday 27 October 2023.
The owner of the dog that was attacked attempted to remove his dog from the situation but suffered an injury to his wrist and hand. He had to go to Frimley Park Hospital and received anti-inflammatory medicine and antibiotics.
His dog suffered a wound to his neck and ear and had to be taken to the vets to receive treatment.
Police launched an investigation and arrested a woman in connection with the incident.
Zakiya Berrabah, 51, of Jubilee Drive, Church Crookham, was later charged with being the owner / person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury.
She pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months at Winchester Crown Court on Wednesday 2 October. Berrabah must also pay £300 compensation to the victim.
The woman’s dog was seized by police and has since been put down.
Recklessness
Fleet Police Sergeant Geoff Hill said:
“The majority of dog owners are responsible, but unfortunately there are a small minority whose recklessness puts the welfare of other animals – and people – at risk.
“It is so important to keep dogs either on leads or under close control, particularly in built-up areas.
“Please keep your dog in sight at all times, be aware of what it is doing, and be confident it will return to you promptly on command. If you cannot be confident of this, the dog should not be off the lead.
“Our officers will do everything we can to ensure our community remains safe and I would like to praise the victim for coming forward and reporting this to us.”
