The M4 in Berkshire is closed after a serious collision at around midnight last night.

It's closed between J13 Chieveley Interchange and J12 Theale Interchange.

Police, National Highways traffic officers, the ambulance and fire service attended the incident overnight.

A National Highways spokesperson says they expect the road to remain closed for a long time as police need to carry out a 'complex investigation'.

National Highways released these diversion routes: "Road users are advised to follow the Hollow Circle diversion symbol on road signs:

  • Leave the M4 at J13. At the Roundabout, take the 3rd exit and join the A34 Southbound towards Newbury.
  • At the A34 / A339 interchange, follow the A339 for approximately 2.5 miles to Newbury.
  • At the A339/A4 roundabout, use the 2nd exit and join the A4 London Road.
  • Follow the A4 for approximately 12.5 miles, at the Roundabout take the 3rd exit and rejoin the M4 eastbound."

Drivers are being urged to allow extra travel time.
