Fifty homes in Basingstoke have had to be evacuated this morning after a water main pipe burst flooding the area.

Hampshire Fire Service says it was called to Trinidad Close around 05:22 this morning to reports of water in people's homes.

A joint effort from firefighters, the police and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council's emergency planning team saw everyone evacuated safely.

Also affected by the burst pipe are garages on Malta Close, homes on Falkland Road and there is a large flood on Carpenters Down Road.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s emergency planning opened Popley Fields Community Centre for all those evacuated and the local authority has started repairs.

The community centre has now been closed.

Firefighters left the scene and returned to station following the stop message at 08:26.

South East Water has confirmed a number of homes in the area are still experiencing issues with their water supply.

In a statement on their website they say work is ongoing to restore supply: "We're really sorry to those of you who are experiencing low water pressure or no water at the moment.

"This has been caused by a burst main which we are trying to fix as quickly as we can. As soon as the repairs have been completed, your water will return to normal.

"We can't say just yet how long this will take but please rest assured we're doing everything we can to get you back up and running as soon as possible."
