Former PM steps into row over Berkshire Arts centre funding
Theresa May wants the conservative-run council to reconsider plans to cut funding to Norden Farm in Maidenhead
MAIDENHEAD’S MP Theresa May has urged the Conservative-run council to reconsider scrapping its art funding.
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has been under pressure by campaigners and opposition councillors to abolish its potential decision to withdraw its support from Norden Farm in Maidenhead and The Old Court in Windsor.
This is part of the 2022/23 budget which is yet to be approved by the council. External independent consultants have reviewed Norden Farm to see what it can do to be ‘self-financing’.
Maidenhead’s MP and former Prime Minister Theresa May said:
“When I have visited Norden Farm I have seen first-hand the excellent programmes Norden Farm delivers and just how valuable their work is for the local community. I understand that the council’s decision will have caused concern.
“Since this announcement I have been speaking with the council about Norden Farm and I am continuing to urge the Council to reconsider their position – to see whether some support can be given to Norden Farm.
“It is my hope that when the consultant’s report is published, Norden Farm and RBWM will be able to work together to find a solution which will be in the best interest of the entire local community.”
Council leader Andrew Johnson (Con: Hurley & Walthams) previously said it was “made clear” to the venue last year the funding would cease due to “tight budgetary constraints”.
However, a “very positive” meeting has been held with Norden Farm about its business plan and future operating model following the independent consultant’s report.
He said on Twitter: “These constructive and purposeful discussions will undoubtedly help to shape our thinking as a cabinet when making our final recommendations next week on our proposed budget in advance of the final debate and hopeful approval at full council on Tuesday 22nd February.”
