A shoplifter banned from entering a number of shops in Andover town centre has been jailed for 32 months.

31-year-old Jake Timothy Collingwood Hughes of The Hexagon in Andover, was sentenced after admitting breaching his Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO), shoplifting, and assault.

Winchester Crown Court heard that Hughes had entered stores in Andover between 11 September and 31 October, as well as committing a number of thefts during this time.

Hughes was accused of three incidents of shoplifting from TK Maxx, to a total of approximately £400, between 14 September and 14 October.

There were further breaches on 31 October when Hughes entered Boots and stole items to an approximate value of £260.

The court also heard how on 15 October Hughes assaulted a security guard and made threats of violence toward him.

This was in breach of a CBO he was issued on 31 July 2021, which banned him from abusing or threatening any person within any retail premises in Andover, and entering a number of stores including the TK Maxx, Boots, and Wilkinsons - which he was sentenced for entering.

After admitting the offences, Hughes was sentenced to a total of 32 months in prison.

Sergeant Jeremy Boughey, of the Andover Town Neighbourhood Policing Team, said:

“We hope that businesses and residents are reassured that we will take action against those who persistently break the law in this way.

“We know that shoplifting and associated anti-social behaviour can have a negative impact on those who work and live in the city centre, and we will look at all powers available to us to bring those responsible to justice.”
