Your extra food could help someone in need in Aylesbury
The Town Council are collecting for a Community Fridge today.
If you have got too much fruit and veg, Aylesbury Town Council want it today.
They are collecting for Aylesbury Vineyard's Community Fridge project, to give unwanted food to those who really need it.
They've got a donation station at the Crown Leys allotments today and tomorrow.
What is a community fridge?
The Community Fridge is an initiative that is operated and managed by the Aylesbury Vineyard Church. It offers local people and businesses the opportunity to donate fresh, good quality leftover food, which may otherwise be wasted.
The Town Council are supporting the Community Fridge by hosting a surplus produce donation station at Crown Leys allotment site from 10am-3pm today and tomorrow.
All seven of the Town Council's allotment sites have flourished since the pandemic hit but has left many allotment holders with extra fruit and vegetables that could become wasteful.
Allotment holders are being encouraged to donate their surplus produce to the Community Fridge by placing their donation in crates across all seven site thanks to Waitrose Aylesbury who are loaning them to the Town Council.
But now Aylesbury Town Council are hoping members of the community who have excess homegrown produce will donate what they can to benefit those in the area who need it most.
Town Mayor, Cllr Mike Smith, says:
"We are asking members of the Aylesbury community to donate their surplus produce to help reduce food wastage but to also support their local community. We are delighted to offer two days for the public to drop off their produce in a safe and socially-distanced way to boost the Community Fridge's stock and to benefit more people in at this difficult time. Thank you to Aylesbury Waitrose for loaning 20 crates to us to help to span this project across our seven sites so all our allotment holders are able to make a contribution."
If you would like to donate surplus fruit or vegetables you have grown, visit Crown Leys allotment site which can be accessed by Havelock Street in Aylesbury from 10am-3pm on Friday 2 or Saturday 3 October.
