NFU Young Farmers' award winner encouraging young people to make a career in farming
Sophie Parkins wants young people to know the opportunities available
A woman from Hertfordshire, who's won a Young Farmers' award, is working to encourage more young people to take up a career in farming.
28-year-old Sophie Parkins has been recognised for her work with the Hertfordshire Young Farmers, and is currently chair for the group, wanting to share the exciting opportunities for young people to fill her seat in the future.
“I think it’s an exciting time for young people to get involved in farming."
Sophie believes it's a great time for younger generations to be getting involved in careers in farming. She said:
“The industry is changing, with new technologies and there are lots of new and exciting opportunities."
Growing up on a farm near Ware, Sophie's love for farming and work surrounding it has made her passionate, and believes that's something that needs to be passed down to those who will be taking the reigns in the future.
“You don’t have to be from a farming background to join the industry and getting involved with Young Farmers is a great way for young people to make connections and get their foot in the door.”
Sophie was first involved with Young Farmers at the age of 10, and has been involved with all elements of the group since joining.
She's credited the group with introducing her to a whole new group of people, making new friends, and even discussed opportunities for training which arise.
As the time comes for Sophie to leave Young Farmers, due to her age, she said: “I am really grateful for my time with Young Farmers and I hope to continue to inspire young people into farming."
