Woman named after Bedford explosion
Fire ripped through a block of flats last week
A woman who died after and explosion and fire in Bedford has been named.
43-year-old Reena James lived at the flats in Redwood Grove where the incident happened last Monday (4 July). It's believed Ms James is the only person to have died after what happened.
Specialist police officers are continuing to support her family after she was formally identified on Friday (8 July).
Ms James lived in the block of the flats where the explosion happened just after 9am.
Chief Superintendent John Murphy, from Bedfordshire Police, said: “This must be an awful time for all of Reena’s loved ones and our thoughts are with them at such a difficult and distressing time.
“Specialist family liaison officers are working with her family and will support them however we can."
Some limited demolition work could start on the affected block of flats as soon as this week, a crucial step in making it a safe environment and allowing investigators to start more detailed work into what happened.
“We understand there is a lot of rumour and speculation regarding the cause of the explosion and fire at Redwood Grove last week,” Chief Superintendent Murphy said.
“Due to the complexity of the scene and how difficult it will be to physically get investigators into the building, we know this will be a long and protracted investigation.
“Until we can access the site, we remain open minded to the cause and detectives are following up numerous lines of enquiry together with fire service investigators.
“I'd like to thank people for their patience and understanding and urge anyone with any information they consider relevant to report it.”
