Workers at the medical warehouse Movianto in Kempston, near Bedford, are walking out in a bid for their employer to recognise 'Unite the Union'.

A picket line has formed over the past few days, and is due to be resumed for the rest of the week in a five-day strike action.

Over 85 workers are calling on their employer to recognise the Union, while Moviento has been strongly resisting.

Moviento is a warehouse and distribution centre for medical equipment and medicine, which are redistributed to local hospitals and GP surgeries.

Its workers were represented by a trade union selected by Moviento, however they are calling for Unite the Union to take over.

Unite the Union representative, Richard Gates, said: "The dispute with the employer is unusual in this day and age, as it's not actually over pay but it's over our members' desire for Unite to be the recognised trade union in Movianto."

"Members joined Unite, 91 of them, when we did the ballot for industrial action, and they felt so strongly they wanted Unite to be union fighting on their behalf that they supported industrial action ballots."

According to Mr Gates, the employers had selected another union to represent their employees in an effort to stop Unite, which had no member in their workplace, and which has since resigned its agreement.

Mr Gates said: "Unfortunately the employers are doing everything in their power to resist Unite, for some reason, for being their members' chosen trade union."

Movianto bosses have been approached for comment but have not yet replied.
