MK Dons have confirmed that Head Coach Mike Williamson has left the club to take up a new role at fellow Sky Bet League Two side, Carlisle United. Williamson will be joined by Assistant Head Coach Ian Watson and First Team Coaches Chris Bell and Carl Magnay in his move.

The club stated that they made every effort to retain Williamson and his coaching staff, initially rejecting Carlisle United's approach. However, after Carlisle signalled their willingness to meet a release clause in Williamson’s contract, MK Dons granted him permission to engage in discussions. Williamson expressed a desire to pursue the new opportunity.

In an official statement, MK Dons said, "We would like to thank Mike, Ian, Chris, and Carl for their efforts during their time at Stadium MK. Everyone at MK Dons wishes them every success in the future."

Club captain Dean Lewington will temporarily take over team responsibilities, including leading training and managing from the dugout when MK Dons face Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.

Chairman Fahad Al Ghanim, CEO Neil Hart, Sporting Director Liam Sweeting, and Performance and Operations Director Simon Crampton have already begun the search for a new Head Coach. The club added that they "look forward to updating supporters on the appointment very soon."

Williamson took over at MK Dons in October 2023 and led them to a fourth-placed finish in Sky Bet League Two last season. The former centre-back made over 400 appearances during his playing career, including more than 150 Premier League appearances for Newcastle United.

Williamson concluded his playing career at Gateshead, where he transitioned to management as player-manager. During his tenure, he led Gateshead to the National League North title in his third season, earning Manager of the Season honours. He also guided the club to a 14th-place finish in the National League and their first-ever FA Trophy final, where they were narrowly defeated by Halifax Town.
