Watford have signed Cypriot international Hector Kyprianou ahead of the 2025/26 Sky Bet Championship season.

The 23-year-old midfielder arrives on a free transfer from Peterborough United and has agreed a five-year contract with the club. He is the first signing made since Paulo Pezzolano was appointed as Head Coach.

“Hector is a player we have monitored for a while and we have been impressed with his technical ability and the passion of his game,” said Sporting Director Gian Luca Nani. “Once the season ended, we asked Peterborough for permission to speak to Hector and we thank them for their cooperation in agreeing to this.

“It was important to act quickly because Hector was a player attracting huge interest from other clubs and we needed to move decisively.

“Hector fits the demands Paulo has for his players – intensity and a high technical and tactical awareness.”

Kyprianou said: “It's an amazing feeling to sign for this club. It's a historic club, it's a massive club. I'm just buzzing to be a part of it now.

“The club matches my ambitions, which are to play as high as possible and reach the Premier League. Our ambitions align, so that is why I chose Watford.

“One of the reasons I joined is that they showed quite a lot of interest in me for a while, and for me that adds a lot of value. To know that they wanted me is a huge positive.

“Paulo sent me a message to say 'welcome' and we're looking forward to working with each other. It's exciting to have a new face in the building, and to start working with him.”

Kyprianou spent the last three seasons at Peterborough, where he made 140 appearances, scored 16 goals and captained the team. He played a key role in helping the club win the Football League Trophy at Wembley in both 2023 and 2024.

He scored in the 2024 final against Birmingham City and lifted the trophy as captain. He also won the club’s Goal of the Season award during his first year for a strike against Forest Green Rovers.

Kyprianou joined Peterborough in 2022 from Leyton Orient, where he had made 79 senior appearances. Earlier in his career, he spent time in the Tottenham Hotspur Academy.

On the international stage, he has earned 10 senior caps for Cyprus, having first played for their Under-19s and Under-21s. He made his full debut in October 2023 against Norway, where he was tasked with marking Erling Haaland.
